March 11 ghost lines

I finished reading Little Paradise today. I sat on the train and for a while I swapped the concrete world of the western suburbs for Shanghai.

The language reminds me of the dress on the cover. Silky and blue. Fine and sequined.

I think it’s a story about courage and faith and fate. About war and the impact it has on people’s lives. It started me thinking about last pages and last lines of books that ghost around my head long after I’ve finished. This list isn’t finished. It’s just what I have so far.

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer. The last lines and the pictures after them.

Stardust by Neil Gamon. All of it but that last paragraph especially.

The Mouse and his Child by Russel Hoban. The last line of this book is my favourite of all time.

Possession by A.S. Byatt. Every bit of this book ghosted me.

I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith.

Oh The Places You’ll Go by Dr Seuss

everyone has a secret inside, something sleeping like that yellow bird

Sometimes I can’t sleep I’m swimming in so many words

slowly, really slowly, I'm spinning song and dancing, rising voice beneath my skin
